Search Engine Optimization Tips
If you have a new website, I am sure you are interested in how you can obtain the search engine placement, especially with google.
Over the years of trial and error, I have had the opportunity to learn some tricks of the trade, and I would like to share some very important information that I have learned over the years. I also ask that if you have anything to add, please be sure to leave a comment.
Websites are Competing (Targeting Huge Keywords)
Websites are competing for the highest placement in google and other search engines, and it is your obligation to do the research and get your website in top placement. The first thing you need to do as a website owner is to try and target the major keywords that are being searched for, by choosing the keywords with less competition first.
You can research keywords at one of many sites. We used: http://www.goodkeywords.com which is free
Find a generic term for your website and enter it into the software program to return a list of good keywords related to your website. You will be provided information on the amount of times the keyword has been searched for on a particular month, and most of the time, that number can be multiplied by 8 in order to give you the number of times it has been searched for in google.
The key here is not to use the most common keyword, but to use the keyword with less competition. You will get some traffic going using those keywords and then you can later focus on the larger keywords.
For example: if we were using the keyword exercise plan to target our website, and we know that there are over one million searches per month on this keyword, we may want to check and use a keyword with less competition, like exercise stories, or exercise choices. These both could be possible keywords we could target. Your keyword should be 3 to 5 keywords strong.
So, assuming we have decided to use the keyword exercise stories, we would then want to check to see what the #1 rakning website for exercise stories listed with google is. During a search today, we found that the number one website that showed up for exercise stories is http://nihseniorhealth.gov/stories/stories.html which happens to be not be a top level domain page at all. This is good news for us….. because it tells us that this site is coming up #1 for a subpage using the keyword exercise stories. So, our goal here is to use our homepage to rank #1 for this same keyword.
